The main reason that this journal exists is so that I can practice writing for Crystal when she's around other people, keeping up her cover identity while making plans. However, I know that I'm neither a perfect roleplayer nor a perfect author, and I'm not really much of a conniving person. Hence, this post.

If you have any suggestions for me or Crystal, please feel free to comment! Am I being too snarky? Too talkative? A touch overbearing? Is she making you or your characters uncomfortable when she's not in Ghostwalker mode? Anonymous commenting is on and IP logging is off, so feel free to tell me if I'm doing it wrong. This goes for the wisps, too.

(Please, for the love of whatever gods you believe in, tell me if I'm making her Sue-ish. One of my great fears is that somehow, in some way, she'll be mistaken for a Mary Sue. She's not supposed to be. Not in the least. If you see any signs of that sort of behavior, kindly slap me with a large trout and inform me so I can fix it.)

So, I've done a little thinking, and realized that having Crystal say "good gods" all the time sounds a little silly, like a euphemism you'd use around kids. XD So, I'm going to try and include more specific references to the gods of Kandask in her oaths and phrases.

Crystal isn't a very religious person. She'll believe that the gods exist when she sees evidence of their handiwork, and she's seen too many devout people in horrible situations. However, she does have some very religious family members, including her sister, and she herself has received many blessings in Anee's name from people she's helped. So, she's at least passingly familiar with the stories and pantheon of Kandask's dominant polytheistic religion.

The deities Crystal will probably refer to most are... ( Anee, God of Balance )( Ixis, Goddess of Knowledge )( Jectif, God of Paths )( Sirano, King of the Gods )( Morgana, Goddess of War )

Actually, that's... pretty much spot-on. Although I do find it funny that the impartial personality test told Crystal she was "strange," "weird," and that she "liked bizarre things." Even computers think that the Ghostwalker is a little on the odd side!  XD That fits, though... That's part of the image I try to create for Crystal. I don't think someone could be a vigilante without being at least a little eccentric.

Some of you might know that Crystal keeps a casebook. Normally, when she's back home and operating normally as Ghostwalker, she writes details of the cases she's working on in it. It's written in Ssashe, so most people wouldn't be able to read it. However, there's always the off chance that someone knows the language of shadow elementals, so she guards it carefully. When it's not in use, it's in Kel'ato's care on the shadow plane. (Sometimes, when she gets it back, she'll find notes in the back that Kel'ato has written. It's a very handy way for the wisps and their summoner to communicate non-verbally.)

Since she can't exactly do her normal job in the OC dressing room, though, she's mainly been using it to write down interesting details on the people she meets and the situations she encounters in town. Chances are, even if your character never gave Crystal his/her name, she's got a page set aside for you in the casebook.

Surprisingly, my vigilante is more normal than I thought. Reading the "do you lie often" question, though, all I could think of was Crystal saying "How would you know? I could be lying here, and you'd never be able to tell. Eh? Eeeeeh?"

... And the "do you believe you have special extrasensory abilities..." I think that's what earned her the points in Schizotypal. "What? I really can see onto another plane of existence! Not many people can do it, but I've learned how to after ...  I can see those condescending smiles and nods, you know..."

Like any secret agent and mage, Crystal has an extensive knowledge of symbols and regularly uses them. Unfortunately, some of these symbols just don't make sense when taken out of the context of Kandask and the Wraiths. XD So, here's a little primer on symbols and symbolic gestures Crystal may use.
  • Apples: This is more of a Wraith thing, but she's adopted their use as symbols. This goes way, way back to when she met her first Wraith, John. Trying to avoid spoilers (since I would still like to publish the Ghostwalker stories someday), John had a problem with a gang, and Crystal got drawn in to try solving it. The gang problems had put John and his daughter into poverty, so whenever they met to discuss the case, Crystal would bring apples and send John home with them. (They were cheap, plentiful at the time, and filling.) Once the story became known among the other Wraiths several years later, they started to give apples to people under their protection. Giving a red apple to someone in need meant "the Wraiths are on the case." (Why a red apple as opposed to any other color? That will have to wait until John's story is finished.) Eventually, Crystal found out about the practice and adopted it.
  • The Mage's Pact: This is a universal Kandaskian symbol, used among mages in a similar way we might use the phrase "cross my heart." The mage traces a six-pointed asterisk pattern in the air, which represents the circle of seven elements. (Celestial, the seventh element, is the point in the center where the lines all connect.) You might also hear of people making pacts "by the Seven (Elements)," or among particularly religious mages, "by Anee's seven tails." (Anee is the Kandaskian god of justice and promises.)
  • The Gem in the Crescent: Picture coming soon. This is a quick way to describe the Kandaskian symbol for shadow magic, a black diamond in the middle of an upward-facing silver crescent.
  • The collar: Surprise! The collar Crystal wears has no symbolism. It's just a gift her sister gave her once. The runes around the band are a general prayer for the safety of a traveller. Crystal can't read them very well.
  • Taking off her glasses to say something: This is a big one. If Crystal takes off her glasses to say something, you can bet she means it in the most sincere, serious way. It's a way to say "this is me talking, really me, no social masks, no physical masks, no games, no trickery."
  • The hunting gryphon: (I knew I was forgetting a big one!) This is the symbol of the Griffite police department. Crystal carries a silver hunting gryphon charm while she's on duty as a sign of her connection to them. The color of the gryphon's feathers indicates clearance level within the police department, while the color of the eyes indicates what branch the owner belongs to. Crystal's charm has silver feathers (a little less than the level of clearance an employed detective would have) and black eyes (special agent, uncategorized).
